No, not the seven most luxurious private jets. This is air charter - we want efficiency, affordability, safety and availability. We want the average private jets, those that allow everyone to fly.
Okay, so some Saudi prince owns a $500 million Boeing. Beyonce bought a private jet for Jay Z as a father’s day present. Photos of the most luxurious jets may make you swoon with disbelief, or perhaps envy. But who really cares about the most luxurious jets? They’re not affordable and they in no way reflect the world of private jets.
That’s why we don’t like super luxurious jets anyway. They give off an impression that flying private is only for the rich and famous. But that’s a myth, even if it is one perpetuated by jet brokers. We are more interested in the average, everyday private jets and what they cost. Because these jets can most efficiently and affordably take you from A to B.
So think less about gold-plated bathrooms and more about the advantages of being able to fly anywhere, anytime. Rather than lavish heart-shaped beds think more about comfortable executive seating that helps you get business done while on the move.
1. Cessna Citation XLS+
Best For: Speed and availability; flights of three to four hours for up to eight people.
This Citation range are currently the best-selling private jets in the world. The Cessna Citation XLS+ hits 700 mph and is a regular between major cities. Usually it’s configured as an eight-seat executive jet, with leather seats that can recline into beds. Wi-Fi is pre-wired and most people continue their work on board. Range is three to four hours, making it useful for almost any destinations across the US. It’s comfortable, widely-available and very affordable. For example, Los Angeles to Las Vegas can cost from $700 per seat.
2. Embraer Phenom 100
Best For: Cost efficiency; flights with one to four passengers.
This is a very light jet. There’s nothing flashy about it, just four seats for passengers and the cockpit. Simplicity is its secret, making it excellent value for money. In particular, this is a private jet of choice for anyone flying solo. You get the speed and efficiency of a jet, without having to pay for a plane that’s bigger than you need. Also check out the Embraer Phenom 300, a seven-seat jet that finds a sweep spot between medium-sized jets and very light jets.
3. Cessna Citation CJ2 & Citation Bravo
Best For: Availability and reliability; short-haul flights for up to six people.
The other side of the Cessna Citation range, these light business jets also present great cost efficiency and availability. The CJ2 and Bravo have a shorter range and are best used on short legs between cities, typically one- to two-hour flights. Although slower than the Citation XLS+ that’s not particularly noticeable over short flights. Others in this range include the CJ3 and Citation II. They are very reliable and always available, a go-to choice for both business and leisure charters.
4. Bombardier Challenger 850
Best For: Long distances & customized interiors; up to six hours with 14 passengers.
Some of the world’s most luxurious private jets are Challenger 850s. The interiors are customized for the buyer, everything from beds and showers to comfortable executive style seating. With a range of six hours and a capacity of 14 passengers, this is the jet you choose when a group of you are flying anywhere in the States (or beyond). As the interiors are different it’s important to check the available amenities and photos before booking.
5. Beechcraft Super King Air
Best For: cost effective air charters over short distances; short runways.
A classic and an icon of the air charter industry. The Super King Air is the world’s best selling turboprop and perfect for flying short distances with just a few people. It is adapted to take off and land on short runways, so you get the maximum choice of where to fly from - so no surprise it’s the most popular private jet for medevac flights as well. The range is short so you won’t be crossing the country. However, the Beechcraft Super King Air offers low-cost air charter and is also great for hopping between multiple destinations in one day.
6. Gulfstream G100 and G150
Best for: Speed and reliability over mid to long distances; six to nine passengers.
It’s a shame they didn’t produce more of the G100 and G150 because these are ideal aircraft when you need to cover long distances efficiently. With a range of up to 3300 miles and a cruising speed of 557 mph, these private jets get you where you need to be, quickly. There are far more luxurious cabin interiors on other jets but as we’ve said before, the luxury of air charters is the time you save.
7. Bombardier Learjet 45
Best For: Speed and efficiency; four-hour flights for up to eight passengers.
A big rival to the Cessna Citation XLS+ at a similar price point. The Learjet 45 is an eight-seat medium-sized jet that comes equipped with everything you need to get business done on a flight. Its range is slightly greater than the Citation XLS+ but essentially it offers the same thing. Again, there's nothing fancy but good reliability and a decent level of availability. If you need better business efficiency on board check out the Learjet 75, an aircraft with an eight-seat double-club configuration.
