20 MOST POPULAR PRIVATE JET AIRPORTS IN THE US & WHY

roofing-100332_1920

Charter flights give you access to more than 2500 private jet airports in the US, plus thousands more international airports. That’s ten times more choice than a commercial flight and you always fly direct, without layovers or hub and spoke routing.

The most private jet airports aren’t always the most exotic. While jet brokers may suggest tropical islands and indulgent destinations, most travelers charter a jet so they can get more done in their day. That's why most of this list is taken up by airports that offer convenience and efficiency for business flyers.

20 Most Popular Private Jet Airports in the US & Why

#1 Tererboro Airport - TEB - New York

With more than double the flight movements of any other private jet airport, Tereboro is comfortably the most popular destination in the US. There’s a choice of five airport FBOs and you touch down just 12 miles from Manhattan. On average there are over 200 private aircraft landing at Teterboro every day.

#2 Westchester County Airport - HPN - New York

More than 30,000 private jets land at Westchester County Airport airport every year and that figures is growing exponentially. The airport is located three miles outside White Plains business district and is also used by travelers visiting Connecticut destinations such as Stanford.

#3 Dallas Love Field Airport - DAL - Dallas

Anyone regularly flying in and out of Dallas Fort Worth International Airport can appreciate why you would want to use Dallas Love Field instead. It’s smaller, closer to the city, and far far less crowded. Seven airport FBOs make it the popular option for business travelers to Dallas.

#4 Washington Dulles International Airport - IAD - Washington

Not an airport you want to get stuck at overnight but very convenient if you’re disembarking at the private terminal and heading straight into downtown Washington, D.C. 2017 saw an 14% increase in private jet departures from here.

#5 William P. Hobby Airport - HOU - Houston

Touch down at William P. Hobby Airport and you’re only seven miles from downtown Houston. Before George Bush Intercontinental this was Houston’s main international airport and has all the necessary facilities, including four runways. Now it’s primarily a hub for private aviation.

#6 Mc Carran International Airport - LAS - Las Vegas

Van Nuys in Los Angeles to Mc Carran is the world’s second most popular private jet routing and there’s an exclusive private terminal for all jet passengers. It’s a route mostly used by leisure passengers, with the airport’s FBO seeing a spike in visitors from Friday to Sunday.

#7 Palm Beach International Airport - PBI - Palm Beach, Florida

Just up the coast from Miami, Palm Beach International has three airport FBOs and provides expedited access to destinations along the Florida coast. However, it is the only private jet airport on this list where aircraft movements are decreasing. Some of the charter plane traffic is switching to the improved private jet facilities at Miami International.

#8 Van Nuys Airport - VNY - Los Angeles

The smart choice for business travelers flying in and out of Los Angeles on Part 135 charters. From here it’s less than 30 minutes road transfer into downtown LA and there are immigration facilities within the FBO for passengers flying outside the US.

#9 Dekalb-Peachtree Airport - PDK - Atlanta

Fly out of Atlanta and you can use one of the world’s busiest international airports (Hartsfield-Jackson) where queuing for security can take over an hour and it’s often a 30-minute walk to the departure gate. Or you can turn up at Dekalb-Peachtree Airport ten minutes before your flight and take off on a charter flight.

#10 Centennial Airport - APA - Denver

An average of 73 private jets use Centennial Airport each day, with passengers preferring its ease and simplicity over the sprawling Denver International Airport. Airvel customers use this airport for both business trips and Colorado ski escapes. Of course, flying on a private jet means none of the hassle bringing your winter sports equipment.

# 11 Chicago Midway International Airport - MDW - Chicago

Like many private jet airports, Chicago Midway has a long history. It opened in 1923 and grew rapidly as aviation was popularized through the 1940s and 1950s. Then, like many airports of that time, it was shut down in favor of a larger airport beyond the city’s limits (O’Hare International Airport). Chicago Midway is still in the heart of the city. After reopening it provides expedited access to business destinations in downtown Chicago.

#12 John Wayne Airport - SNA - Orange County

The only airport in Orange County and a convenient choice for any destination in the south of Los Angeles, John Wayne airport has multiple FBOs as well as immigration and customs facilities. Families often use this airport on weekend breaks to nearby Disneyland.

#15 Nashville International Airport - BNA - Nashville

Over 14 million annual passengers use the commercial terminals at Nashville International, with over half of them arriving on Southwest Airlines. The private terminal has gone from strength to strength in recent years and is served by multiple airport FBOs, servicing over 100,000 private jet flyers in 2017. Nashville is a great example of an airport that has balanced the needs of both commercial and private jet passengers.

#16 Boeing Field / King County International Airport - BFI - Seattle

This airport is located just five miles south of downtown Seattle, far closer than Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. While the latter encourages you to arrive at the airport early - why is it always so busy there! - flying on a private jet means turning up just ten minutes before departure. If you’re late? Just phone ahead and the plane will wait.

#17 San Jose International Airport - SJC - San Jose

Another of the California entries on this list and another that’s popular for its proximity to business destinations. Most private jet passengers use this airport to reach Silicon Valley and locations in and around Mountain View, where Google and other major global players are located. As with others in California, the airport is serviced by FBOs including Signature Flight Support and Atlantic Aviation.

#18 Austin-Bergstrom International Airport - AUS - Austin

Relatively unique to this list, Austin-Bergstrom opened as a joint facility for both commercial and private aviation. Each day, 250 scheduled commercial departures are complemented by over 50 private jet flights, with passengers disembarking just five miles from downtown Austin.
