Simple Tips on Getting a Better Value Air Charter

Using a private jet charter cost estimator allows you to explore the prices of different aircraft between different destinations. Here are some simple tips for lowering your air charter costs.

Book air charters individually

A single operator or aircraft may be best for one journey, but not necessarily the next. A turboprop is great value on a short business hop while a mid-sized jet will be better for a longer 1000-mile journey. However, being tied to a specific aircraft type means paying more than necessary for some flights, or flying in an unsuitable aircraft for others.

Every flight is different. You will have different destinations, passengers, in-flight needs. Booking air charters individually means you can always select the best value aircraft and operator for the needs of each individual flight.

Pay as you fly, rather than paying upfront

Many air charter solutions require pre-payment. Private jet cards start at USD 50,000 and this figure is far higher for fractional jet ownership. Paying upfront rarely leads to long-term savings, especially if you are tied into a single type of aircraft or geographical area. It only makes financial sense if you have a clear strategy for using your flight hours and have already calculated all the additional charges.

Most private jet cards impose many additional fees and surcharges, so the original upfront cost does not equate to your total investment. With a private jet charter cost estimator you can compare different aircraft and their costs for each individual flight, without any financial investment. Just pay as you fly.

Be careful of minimum flying hours

The price of any flight is dependent on the duration of the flight. Obviously a three-hour flight costs more than a one-hour flight on the same aircraft. However, many operators and aircraft are subject to a minimum number of hours. For example, an operator may charge a minimum of two hours flying time, so 30 minutes in the air can cost quadruple what you would expect. Other operators do not impose a minimum. For shorter flights you will want to avoid these minimum flying hours.

Also note that some operators charge for taxi time on the runway. This can often be 12 minutes at either end, so an extra 24 minutes of flying time. That doesn’t seem like much but it’s a hefty surcharge on a USD 3000 per hour aircraft.

Understand how the cost of an air charter is calculated

In the US there are over 2500 charter operators and more than 4000 jets for charter. There are options and customizations, along with enormous price disparities dependent on the operator and flight. Air charters are governed and made very safe by FAA Part 135 – read more about FAA Part 135 here. All jets under Part 135 are chartered on a per-plane basis. You do not pay per seat and must charter the entire aircraft.

The price of every private jet flight is dependent on three major factors.

1) The type and size of the jet – every jet has a different per hour charter price

2) The duration of the flight or the operator’s minimum number of hours per segment

3) Surcharges and additional costs, such as 7.5% FET or fuel charges

This guide to aircraft for charter can give you an indication of the variety on offer. Smaller jets are cheaper per hour than bigger jets. Aircraft with more seats and a longer range obviously cost more per hour.

Multiply the cost per hour by the duration of the flight and you have a rudimentary private jet charter cost estimator. Additional costs vary between operators and aircraft. The list can be baffling so always look for a transparent end price.

Private Jet Costs With a Private Jet Card

Estimating the costs of a private jet charter can be complicated with private jet cards. Jet cards grew in popularity by promising simplicity. However, the growth in private jet cards means there are now more than 250 programs on the market. The number of providers has doubled in the last decade. Some private jet cards have more than 30 different surcharges.

With more than 250 different memberships you need to be clear about where and when you will use your hours,  before comparing costs and schemes.

1. How many hours per year will you need to charter a jet?

2. What type of aircraft will you need? Most schemes restrict you to a specific aircraft type.

3. When do you plan to travel? There are many hot dates for private jet travel. Some schemes have blackout dates when you cannot fly, others implement surcharges on more than 100 days of the year.

With this information as a starting point you can then start calculating the total cost by adding on all the additional fees.

  • Initiation fees?
  • Annual membership fees?
  • FET tax at 7.5%?
  • Minimum hours per flight?
  • Taxi time?
  • Hangar fees, overnight fees, de-icing, FBO surcharges, state taxes, airport taxes, special events surcharges?

Add up all the costs, divide it by different flights you plan to take, and there should be a private jet charter cost estimate somewhere among the figures.
